Free breast implants for student

Feifei (not her real name), a 21-year-old college student in Hefei, East China's Anhui province, was self-conscious about her figure so she took part in a breast modeling competition in July. She wanted breast implants, but could not afford the operation.

Luck was on her side: a plastic surgery hospital offered free surgery for Feifei as a promotion on Sept 1. The surgery, including breast implants, dental work and eye makeup, would normally cost up to 380,000 yuan ($62,295). After the surgery, on Sept 24, Feifei was named "The Best Star Face" by the Fourth International Breasts Model Contest.

"I don't regret anything, because the surgery has helped boost my confidence," she said.

As more young people opt to have surgery, many wonder about the real causes behind the booming industry in China, and whether it is worth the risks.

A survey by China Youth Daily found 71.5% of the participants judge others by their looks, and 49.4% believe "a pretty face can change your life, and even help you realize your dreams".
