Man receives artificial in vitro heart
A 23-year-old man survived with the support of an artificial in vitro heart after his heart nearly stopped beating for seven days, Chinanews.com reported on Tuesday.
The man, alias Xiaoliang, got a cold on Jan 2 and was diagnosed with severe viral myocarditis four days later. When he was sent to the Intensive Care Unit on Jan 10, his heart was hardly beating.
Doctors applied an extracorporeal membrane oxygenator in place of the patient's heart. With the help of the in vitro heart, Xiaoliang's heart gradually started to work four days after the application and he could live with his own heart seven days later.
