Li Keqiang received endorsement as Chinese premier Friday morning at the 5th plenary meeting of the first session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.
Nearly 3,000 NPC deputies voted to approve newly-elected President Xi Jinping's nomination of Li as the candidate for premier.
Li is the seventh premier since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, replacing Wen Jiabao who had headed the State Council since 2003.
Also at the meeting, NPC deputies voted to approve the nomination of Fan Changlong and Xu Qiliang as vice-chairmen of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. They elected Zhou Qiang president of the Supreme People's Court, and re-elected Cao Jianming procurator-general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.
