A Midsummer Night's Dream By Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve
Date: April 22-23-7:30 pm
Venue: Shanghai Grand Theater
Price: 180-880 yuan
Le songe d'une nuit d'ete (A Midsummer Night's Dream) is an opera-comic in three acts composed by Ambroise Thomas to a French libretto by Joseph-Bernard Rosier (1804-1880) and Adolphe de Leuven. Although it shares the French title for Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, its plot is not based on the play. Shakespeare himself is a character in the opera as are Elizabeth I and Falstaff. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Grand Theater hosted some of the world's greatest ballet companies, notably Isadora Duncan, or Nijinsky and the Ballets Russes. At its reopening in 1962, the Grand Theater created its own ballet company. Currently managed by Philippe Cohen, it is composed of 22 classically-trained dancers from around the world, performing in the neo-classical and contemporary styles. Each season features two new productions, repertoire performances at home or on tour, school productions and educational workshops.
