29 killed in two road accidents in India

NEW DELHI - At least 29 people were killed and 50 others injured in two road accidents in India on Tuesday, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.

In a bus accident in Indian northeast state Assam on Tuesday morning, 23 people were killed and 40 injured, police said. Six children and five women were among those killed.

The accident took place when an overcrowded bus hit a truck on a national highway.

The bus had a capacity of 35 passengers, but was carrying 67 people, police said.

Another accident happened in Indian northern state Uttar Pradesh Tuesday morning. A tourist bus, carrying pilgrims from eastern West Bengal state, rammed into a truck, killing six and injuring over 10 people, police said.

According to eyewitnesses, the mishap took place as the bus driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed into a truck parked by the roadside.

The bus was also overcrowded with about 60 aboard, police said.
