Israeli killed in Ashkelon

ASHKELON, Israel -- The mayor of this southern Israeli city says an Israeli was killed and seven were hurt in a Gaza missile attack.

The mayor, Benny Vaknin, told Israel Army Radio on Monday that the missile hit a construction site in the city of 120,000, about 17 kilometers (10 miles) north of Gaza.

In recent months, Gaza's Hamas rulers have been attacking targets deeper and deeper inside Israel. On Sunday, Hamas missiles for the first time struck near the city of Ashdod, twice as far from Gaza as Ashkelon.
