PYONGYANG -- Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), registered as a candidate for the deputy of army in the upcoming parliament election, state media said Thursday.

Although all constituencies throughout the country nominated him as candidate, Kim registered at Constituency No. 333 of the Korean People's Army, as "he put forward the People's Army as the mainstay and powerful main force of the revolution and trained it into the invincible revolutionary army," the official KCNA news agency said, quoting a report of the Central Election Committee for the 12th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA).

The SPA session is due on March 8.

The SPA is the highest legislative body in the DPRK. Its members are elected though popular vote to serve a term of five years.
