Afghan army kills 5 insurgents, arrests 12 others

KABUL-- Afghan troops launched operation against Taliban insurgents in the eastern province of Khost and surrounding areas Saturday and have killed five rebels and detained dozen others, an army officer Mastak Khan Zazi said.

"During the operation backed by the international troops, five insurgents were killed and 12 others including four injured militants were detained from the districts of Ali Shir and Sabari of Khost province," Zazi told Xinhua on Sunday.

He also said that the aim of the operation is to further stabilize security in the eastern region.

Meantime, Taliban militants have not made any comment so far.
