Bissau army says will obey democratic institutions

BISSAU -- Guinea-Bissau's armed forces command said on Monday the situation in the West African country was under control after the killing of President Joao Bernardo Vieira, and pledged to respect democratic institutions.

"The armed forces command reiterates its commitment and determination to obey democratically elected institutions," said a statement from the military command, whose head, General Batista Tagme Na Wai, was killed in an attack late on Sunday.

"A commission of military chiefs has been set up to manage the crisis," the statement said.
