Moderate earthquake jolts central Japan

TOKYO -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 jolted Hokkaido in northern Japan on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The focus of the quake, which occurred at 08:21 pm local time, was some 30 km underground at 42.5 degrees north latitude and 145. 2 degrees east longitude. The quake was felt strongly in eastern Hokkaido.  

There were no reports of injuries or damage. No tsunami warning was issued.
