Updated: 2009-06-08 15:45 WASHINGTON - A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck 15 miles (23 km) off the Caribbean coast of Honduras early on Monday, the US Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The quake struck at 11:13 pm local time 1:13 am EST/0513 GMT off La Ceiba, Honduras, and had a relatively shallow depth of 6.2 miles (10 km), the USGS said. Earthquakes that close to the surface are often more powerful than deeper tremors. On May 28, a 7.1-magnitude offshore quake struck Honduras, killing six people, destroying at least 60 houses and damaging other buildings across the poor country of 7 million. A smaller quake of magnitude 5 shook the Central American country last week, just before a meeting of the Organization of American States in Honduras' No. 2 city, San Pedro Sula. |
