Updated: 2009-07-13 10:27 MEXICO CITY: Mexico's non-government organizations (NGOs) have requested asylum for Hondurans fleeing their nation due to the post-coup crisis, a migrant activist said on Sunday.
Pedro Pantoja, on behalf of 20 migrant organizations, said they had urged Mexican authorities to grant refugee status to Hondurans following the June 28 coup that ousted then-president Manuel Zelaya. According to Pantoja, NGO-run houses in the southeastern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca have begun receiving Honduran families fleeing political crisis in their country. Pantoja said his organization had urged a halt of kidnaps and attacks on Central Americans in his country. |
