UN mission in Iraq extended for a year

UNITED NATIONS: The Security Council is extending the UN civilian mission in Iraq by one year.

The council adopted the resolution unanimously Friday.

The resolution reaffirms the UN mission's importance in assisting the government to hold elections and in helping Iraqis to strengthen their democracy, advance political dialogue and work toward national reconciliation.

The Security Council also underscored the need for all communities in Iraq to participate in the political process. The council said they also should reach a comprehensive solution on the distribution of resources, resolve disputes over internal boundaries and work towards national unity.
