KUNDUZ, Afghanistan: An unknown armed man gunned down a former Mujahidin commander in wee hours of Thursday in Kunduz province of northern Afghanistan, provincial police chief said.

"Hajji Khaluddin was leaving a mosque after Morning Prayer, when an unidentified armed man opened fire and wounded him seriously," Mohammad Razaq Yaqubi told Xinhua.

Khaluddin died of his wounds later in hospital, he added.

"Investigation has been launched to probe the incident, and police has been attempting to arrest the attacker," he further said.

Khaluddin had been the mayor of Kunduz city in the province of the same name before the Taliban region. No groups or individuals have yet claimed responsibility.

Kunduz, a relatively peaceful province until early this year, has been the scene of increasing militancy over the past several months.
