Taliban claims attack on US military base in Afghanistan

KABUL: Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on an US military base in eastern Afghan province of Khost late on Wednesday.

Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman in Khost province, told Xinhua by mobile phone from undisclosed location that a militant wearing Afghan army uniform blew himself up inside the military base, killing some two dozen Americans.

The spokesman's claim has yet to be verified.

The US State Department has confirmed the death of eight US citizens in the suicide bombing Wednesday.      

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force issued a press release Thursday saying that an improvised explosive device went off near a patrolling armored vehicle four kilometers south of Kandahar city on Wednesday, killing four Canadian soldiers and one Canadian journalist.
