PARACHINAR, Pakistan: Police say a roadside bomb has struck a vehicle in Pakistan's volatile northwest, killing a former irrigation minister and his bodyguard.

Police official Umer Hayat Khan says the two others riding in the car were critically injured. The attack occurred Sunday in Hangu district in North West Frontier Province.

Khan says former Irrigation Minister Ghaniur Rehman and his guard were killed by the blast, which destroyed the vehicle.

Khan says Rehman was a member of the province's ruling Awami National Party, which has been a frequent target for militants in the area.
