MOSCOW - Moscow has been blanketed with some 45.4 cm of snow over the last four days in a rare case in decades, the Moscow Weather Service said on Monday.

The municipal government dispatched 23,000 snowplows and 5,500 cleaners to clear 417,000 cubic meters of snow in the past 24 hours, doubling the amount of snow removed daily in previous winters.

More than 17 million cubic meters of snow have been removed in Moscow since the start of this winter, compared to 10 million cubic meters last winter.

Though the blizzards wreaked havoc on roadways, Moscow's railway and air services are open for business as usual.

Meteorologists predict the Russian capital to be hit by about 15 cm of snow on Monday, but heavy snow showers will halt on Tuesday and sunny days are expected.
