ATHENS - Greece on Monday said it is contemplating a cooperation accord with Qatar on a natural gas project worth over $4 billion.

Greek Minister of State Haris Pamboukis has been contacting Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah in the past few days on the matter, an official statement released by the government said.

The project, when agreed on by both parties, will produce electricity as well as natural gas from Astakos in western Greece.

The project is expected to create 1,500 jobs at a time when Greece is facing severe economic and financial crises.

Greece expects the project to strengthen its role in the regional energy market, while Qatar expects to gain access to the region through the project.
