Sharks killed for fins in Ecuador
A fisherman cuts the fin off a shark they just captured and killed in a bay in Manta, Ecuador, on March 15, 2010. Sharks are greatly valued for their fins, which can fetch high prices. The market demand for this one part of the shark has given rise to shark 'finning,' a practice in which the fins are cut off a captured shark and the rest of the animal dumped, often alive, back into the sea, which is one of the main reasons for the decline in the shark population.
