Unidentified gunmen fired an M-79 grenade at outside of a building of headquarters of the Provincial Police Region 5, leaving cracks in a concrete wall and shattering glass mirrors in an office of deputy commander Pol Maj Gen Bandop Sukhonthaman on the second floor of the building, local media reported.

Bandop and commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police Pol Maj Gen Sommai Kongwisaisuk rushed to the scene after the blast.

Police thought that the attack was politically motivated.

Chiang Mai, some 700 km north of Bangkok, was hit by several bomb blasts since February.
