34 killed in road accident in northern India

NEW DELHI - Thirty-four people were killed when their mini-truck overturned and was hit by a bus in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday night, reported the Indo-Asian News Service Sunday.

At least 12 others were also injured in the incident took place in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district, said the report quoting police sources.

Thirty-three men of a funeral procession and the driver of the bus have been killed. The people riding the truck were returning to their native places in Ujhani after performing the last rites of a dead man on the Kachla ghat (river bank) in Badaun, said the report.

Road accident rate in India is among the highest in the world, with at least 100,000 killed each year on the road.
