The suspect, dressed in black, is a male student from the sprawling school about 14 mile(23 km) south of downtown Los Angeles. He walked out of a classroom he holed up and was handcuffed and led away by officers, CNN footage showed.

Two victims, all students from the school, were injured in the incident, Los Angeles police authorities said.

One of the injured students, a 15-year-old girl was wounded in the head and listed in critical conditions. She has been in surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. A 15-year-old boy was in stable condition, the police said.

The incident appeared to be an accident, according to Los Angeles Unified School District spokesman Robert Alaniz.

The suspect brought a gun to the school in a backpack, and the weapon may have discharged accidentally when he set the backpack on the desk, school officials said.

The incident was reported at 10:30 am at the campus at 1301 W. 182nd St, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The school has 3,200 students and some 140 faculties, according to reports.
