Riot happens in southern Thailand prison

BANGKOK - Thai Inmates on Thursday morning caused riot at the Central Prison in Thailand's southern province of Narathiwat after prison guards searched their living quarters and seized several mobile phone, drugs and weapon, The Nation online reported.  

The search by some 70 prison guards took place at about 06:30 am local time. The officials found batons, hammers and knives among the weapons, plus more than 100 cellphone and methamphetamine pills.

Seeing their belonging seized, the inmates booed the officials and threw objects at them.

The terrified officials ran out of the prison through three gates.

About 500 officials were sent to maintain law and order.

At about 02:00 pm local time the situation returned to normal.
