40 killed in northern India road accident

NEW DELHI - At least 40 pilgrims were killed and around 20 injured when the tractor-trolley carrying them overturned and fell into a deep roadside ditch in a rural area in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, local police said.

The accident took place near Gauapar village, some 300 km from state capital Lucknow, when the group was on its way to a temple.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital.
