KUNDUZ, Afghanistan - At least three militants, including a suicide bomber, were killed in a car bomb explosion and ensuing gunfire hitting an Afghan Border Forces' military camp in the country's northern Kunduz province on Tuesday, a local source confirmed.

"A suicide bomber drove and exploded a vehicle packed with explosive in front of the gate of the facility roughly at 7:00 a.m. local time in Imam Sahib district. Shortly after the blast, four militants exchanged fire with security forces manning the camp," the source told Xinhua anonymously.

The source added that the militants tried to breach and enter the compound, but border forces fought back the attackers, killing two militants.

"Two militants fled from the site and the situation went back to normal hours after the gunfight," he said.

Hadi Jamal from Afghan National Army's 217 Pamir Corps confirmed the incident to Xinhua, saying "additional details will be released as appropriate."

Local villagers told Xinhua the militants used a hijacked military armored vehicle in the attack. They said the militants fired several rounds of mortars and Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) on the camp in the district, in the northern part of the province, 250 km north of Kabul.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Afghan officials had blamed Taliban militants for such attacks in the past.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes in recent years. An army general and two personnel of Afghan border force were killed in an improvised bomb explosion in Kunduz over the weekend.
