Editor's note: China released its 7th national census on May 11. According to the census, Chinese mainland registered a population of 1.41 billion, with an annual growth rate of 0.53 percent in the past decade, down from 0.57 percent recorded from 2000 to 2010. Chinese aged 60 and above reached 264.02 million, or 18.70 percent of population, up 5.44 percentage points from 2010. What are the challenge and opportunities facing China over its demographic shifts? Readers share their views.

I think it is really courageous for our government to slow down the speed of population growth. On the one hand, slower growth means relinquish the the demographic dividend. On the other hand, it also shows China's resolution toward the transformation and upgrading of our industries. We are not going to manufacture those low-end products, and we're going to be a world leader in science and technology.
