China and European Union should maintain regularly strategic communication, enhance mutual understanding, expand cooperation consensus to jointly respond to various global challenges, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday.

Speaking with Josep Borrell, European Union high representative for foreign affairs and security policies, via video link, Wang underlined the need for China and the EU, the two major powers in the multipolar world, to prepare for the next-phase high-level exchanges, so as to provide strategic guidance for bilateral cooperation and send a positive signal to the world.

Borrell said the EU is still committed to improving its relations with China though bilateral ties are encountering some specific problems.

He reiterated that the EU adheres to the one-China policy, adding that the EU as a whole and all member states should not deviate from the position.

He agreed that the EU and China should enhance mutual understanding, saying the two sides should demonstrate spirit of friendship and cooperation to promote next phase high-level exchanges to yield positive results.

As the ongoing Ukraine crisis has a serious impact on the EU and the world at large, he said the EU called for a ceasefire as soon as possible and hoped China could play a significant role in promoting peace.

Wang said China is deeply grieved over the crisis in Ukraine and the country has always assessed the situation and decided policies based on the merits of the matter. Efforts have been made by China in its own way to deescalate the situation and seek peace at an early date, he added.

China would make renewed efforts with the international community to call for achieving ceasefire, pushing peace talks, preventing large-scale humanitarian crisis and opening the door to peace, Wang said.

He underlined that time will prove China's position on the Ukraine issue is responsible and can stand the test of the history.
