The National Health and Family Planning Commission and other ministries and departments jointly issued the 13th Healthy Aging Five-Year Plan (2016-20) recently, which advances improving health services for the elderly, enhances construction of the medical security system and will continuously increase the health level of senior citizens.
The conception of healthy aging was first advanced in the Healthy China 2030 Planning Outline issued last October. This plan officially proposed the concept of healthy aging, which refers to creating social support and a living environment that are conducive to senior citizens' health from an early age, in order to extend people's life expectancy and improve the health of the elderly.
According to an estimate of the Commission, by 2020 there will be 255 million people above 60 years of age in China, accounting for 17.8 percent of China's overall population.
The plan puts forward nine tasks to promote healthy aging in China, and one of the important tasks it sets out is to prevent and control chronic diseases among the aged and limit the incapacitation caused by chronic diseases.
