WeChat responded to a rumor that it looked at a user's chat history, saying it was purely a misunderstanding, on Tuesday.

WeChat, the country's most popular messaging app, said on its official public account: "Respecting users' privacy has always been one of the most important principles of WeChat. We do not have the right or a reason to look at your WeChat."

WeChat also said it does not keep any user's chat history and chat content is only stored on the user's mobile phone, computer and other terminal devices. WeChat does not use users' chat content for big data analysis, it added.

According to huanqiu.com, Li Shufu, chairman of Geely Automobile, said in a forum that Ma Huateng, chairman and CEO of Tencent Holdings, looked at users' WeChat history every day and thought it was easy to expose commercial secrets.
