According to an announcement by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, a number of local officials, including the Party chief and the mayor of Zhangjiakou in Hebei province, have been held accountable for wrongdoings in poverty alleviation work.
In all, five officials have been punished for embezzling poverty alleviation funds or failing to implement poverty relief work in their jurisdictions.
The case shows the CCDI's determination to fight against any misdeeds in poverty alleviation work. Last year, in August, the CCDI exposed several cases of corruption related to poverty alleviation work, which involved several provinces and regions all over China.
The next three years are of great significance for China to achieve the goal of completely eliminating poverty. At the end of last year, the CCDI released a working plan for dealing with corruption and violations in poverty alleviation field from 2018 to 2020, which focuses on the management and use of poverty alleviation funds related to the rural basic living allowance, rural dilapidated housing renovation, rural residents relocation, industrial poverty alleviation and infrastructure construction in poverty-stricken regions.
