Are 'five-star' public restrooms necessary?

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2018-01-15 09:34

Editor's note: Since China's toilet revolution was launched in 2015, a number of "five-star” public bathrooms have popped up in cities around the country. Are luxury toilets necessary? Forum readers share their opinions.

Public toilets should be functional and not aesthetics. Five-star toilets are an overkill. As long as there are toilet papers and soap and the toilets are clean and hygienic, that is good enough. Money should be spent on more cleaners or more clean functional toilets. We do not live in a toilet anyway. We just use it and go.

A “five-star” public bathroom was recently spotted in the Shapingba district of southwestern China's Chongqing municipality. The bathroom is equipped with TV, Wi-Fi and a baby-care room. In addition, it provides free drinking water, mobile phone charging stations and automatic shoe polishers.
