South China’s Guangdong province will deepen reforms in key areas as it is positioning in construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, said the newly-elected provincial governor.

“We will accelerate development of a new system of open economy and improve business and investment environment to help revitalize the real economy,” said Ma Xingrui.

Ma was speaking during a meeting with a group of domestic and overseas journalists after he was elected by the local legislature members as the governor of Guangdong.

The Greater Bay Area includes Hong Kong, Macao and cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Huizhou and Zhaoqing in the Pearl River Delta.

The regional GDP of Guangdong, an economic powerhouse in South China, topped 8.99 trillion yuan in 2017, accounting for 10.5 percent of China’s total, according to a government work report.
