According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's GDP grew 6.9 percent in 2017 on a year-on-year basis, exceeding 80 trillion yuan ($12.70 trillion) for the first time.
According to the NBS, the GDP of 14 cities exceeded 1 trillion yuan in 2017. The overall GDP of the 14 cities in the 1 trillion yuan club was 24.02 trillion yuan, and they accounted for 29 percent of China's overall GDP in 2017.
Ten out of the 14 cities are eastern cities, with Shanghai becoming the first city in China whose GDP has exceeded 3 trillion yuan. Shenzhen's GDP exceeds that of Guangzhou for the first time.
Tianjin's GDP growth sharply declined to 3.6 percent in 2017 from 9 percent in 2016. On Jan 11, Tianjin Binhai New Area announced that its GDP in 2016 had fallen to 665.4 billion yuan from 1 trillion yuan due to statistical caliber adjustment, and the New Area's GDP in 2017 was about 700 billion yuan.
Chongqing's GDP now exceeds that of Tianjin, which means it has become the first western city to rank in the top five cities with GDP over 1 trillion yuan. Wuxi and Changsha's GDP exceeded 1 trillion yuan for the first time.
