Vice-president: China to support Red Cross humanitarian cause

China will continue its commitment to supporting the Red Cross humanitarian cause and encourage the Red Cross Society of China to strengthen exchanges with the International Committee of the Red Cross under the framework of Belt and Road Initiative, Vice-President Wang Qishan said.

Wang made the statement when meeting with Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, on Wednesday.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has made positive contributions to safeguarding human life and health, and promoting world peace and development, Wang said.

Currently the international humanitarian cause is facing grim situations, and the international community should make more efforts in humanitarian aid, especially developed countries that should fulfill obligations in this field, Wang said. President Xi Jinping proposed building a community of shared future for mankind, advocating humanitarianism, universal fraternity and dedication, he said.

Maurer evaluated highly China's contributions and extended gratitude for the country's support. He said his organization would like to further exchanges with China in areas such as the Belt and Road Initiative.
