KUNMING -- Police in Southwest China's Yunnan province said Wednesday that they have seized over 40 kg of methamphetamine and detained two suspects in a cross-border drug trafficking case.

The suspects agreed to drive a car from Myanmar to Kunming, the provincial capital, for 50,000 yuan ($7,800) in May.

The police intercepted the car on May 14, and found meth weighing 40 kg in the interlayer under the foot pedal of the front seat.

Yunnan is a major front in China's battle against drug crime, as it borders the Golden Triangle known for drug production and trafficking. The amount of drugs seized in Yunnan accounts for 70 percent to 80 percent of all drugs seized across the country.

During the first four months of 2018, Yunnan's border control authorities seized a record high of nearly 3.5 tonnes of drugs.
