Shipbuilding breakthrough
China's shipbuilding industry developed rapidly in the new century to start making high-end vessels for domestic and overseas customers.
The LNG carrier was hailed the "pearl on crown" with high technologies, high value-added and high difficulties, and the manufacturing cost was also expensive. In the past, only a dozen of foreign shipyards could build the "pearl".
However, Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp, bagged an order to build a LNG carrier with tank capacity of 147,000 cubic meters in 2004.
In order to complete the order, the shipyard conquered difficulties, and succeeded to develop its owned core parts, and finally delivered the LNG carrier to customer in April 3, 2008.
After the difficulties were conquered, the orders to the shipyard began coming. Now, the shipyard has delivered 18 LNG carriers.
