Two individuals suspected to be responsible for the fallen signboard that killed three pedestrians and injured six have been taken into police custody, the news office of the city's Huangpu district said on Tuesday.
Coercive measures, which may include summons, surveillance, detention, arrest or other measures, were taken against the two suspects on Monday.
Police are still investigating if more people should be held responsible for the accident apart from the two individuals identified by their surnames Li and Chen.
The accident occurred on Sunday night on East Nanjing Road when a section of the signage above a shop broke off and plummeted into a group of pedestrians.
The news office said that the shop selling artifacts, electronics and clothes is owned by Shanghai Trtown Industrial and had started its operations in July 2015.
The office added that the shop owners had ignored directives to reinforce the signboard ahead of the upcoming typhoon and flood season.
