There is a special earthen house along a cultural pedestrian street in Xinxiang city, Henan province, which has four Chinese characters meaning "the soul of soil" written on its front gate. The earthen house belongs to Guo Fengze, who has created more than 400 pieces of clay sculptures with a unique style. The artworks he created are by turns exaggerated and funny; some are realistic, while some are ironic.
The 61-year-old Guo didn't receive higher education. But taking after his father, he fell in love with fine arts and clay sculpture. Guo's father graduated from the former Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and had been an artist ever since.
