Recently, some heads of British universities have called on the government to modify its visa policy, in particular allowing international students to stay in the country for a longer time after they graduate.

If the suggestion is taken, overseas students could be more flexible and have more time to find a job in the UK.

"Actually, students can stay and work in the UK if they can find a graduate job that has a salary that is over 24,000 pounds a year," she said. "So what we are trying to discourage is students finishing their studies and then going to work in the coffee shop, because that is not fair to British people who might not have a degree.

"And that's one of the things that we have been discussing."

She added: "The most important thing is that we continue to support Chinese students and international students coming to study in the UK, make sure they have a really good experience when they are there, and if they want to, they can carry on and work in the UK and get some experience when they finish their studies."
