Over 100 poisoned by tap water in east Ukraine

Xinhua | Updated: 2018-09-29 10:17

KIEV - At least 117 people were hospitalized for tap water poisoning in the non-government-controlled city of Makiivka in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, an official said on Friday.

Pavlo Lysyanskyi, a representative of Ukraine's ombudsman in Donetsk and Lugansk regions, wrote on Facebook that all hospitalized were in moderately severe condition.

Local media reported that these people fell ill after drinking tap water, which was contaminated with manganese. They showed symptoms such as stomachache, vomit, chills and fever.

According to preliminary information, the malfunction of Makiivka central water treatment system likely caused the incident.
