WASHINGTON -- Two people died as a result of a partial building collapse at an Amazon distribution warehouse in southeastern Baltimore in the US state of Maryland, authorities said Saturday.

Roman Clark, chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department, said that a 50-foot (about 15.3 meter) wall collapsed on Friday night at the Amazon Fulfillment Center as a storm swept through the area.

One man was found under debris Friday night and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The firefighters recovered the body of a second man Saturday morning, according to a report from the Baltimore Sun newspaper.

It's not clear if the men were Amazon employees or contractors from a trucking company.

"It's still an active scene right now. We're going through the rest of the debris to be sure no one else is there," said Clark.

"All of a sudden, we just heard these loud noises. The power shut off. It was just crazy inside," Brandon McBride, a witness, told the CNN affiliate WBAL.

"It just sounded like bombs were dropping everywhere. The whole side (of the building) was just dropping." McBride told the station.
