Over August-October when Yu followed the principle of zero waste 6R she and her boyfriend Joe Harvey both produced only two cans of garbage.

Now, the couple have opened a small shop called The Bulk House in Nanluoguxiang, Beijing, to advocate a zero-waste life.

At the store they use stainless steel straws to replace plastic ones; solid wood products to replace plastic options; cloth bags printed with environmentally friendly logos. And they send parcels to buyers without plastic packaging and using 100 percent degradable corn syrup paper tape.

Most of the products sold in the store can be reused, and a small portion of them which are not recyclable can degrade.
