With the 2019 Spring Festival around the corner, China Daily sat down with ambassadors and diplomats to talk about their understanding of Spring Festival, outlook on bilateral relations, and their New Year greetings to the Chinese people.

Spring Festival, considered the most important cultural occasion for Chinese people, reminds Danish Ambassador to China A. Carsten Damsgaard of how Christmas is celebrated in Denmark.

In both China and Denmark, the evening before the actual holiday is most important. “The evening before you get together with your family,” the ambassador said.

With Chinese culture fascinating foreigners for many years, the ambassador himself is particularly interested in the art and design of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), like wood furniture and the craftsmanship involved in creating it.

“This is also the great inspiration for the famous Danish furniture architects from the middle century,” he said.

Speaking of bilateral relations, Damsgaard noted 2018 was special.

"Last year was a particular year, because we celebrated and marked the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Denmark, and it was celebrated throughout the year both in China and Denmark. We continue on that path in 2019 and we look forward to welcoming many more Chinese tourists in Denmark,” he said.

Another highly anticipated event that will happen this year is the expected arrival of two special Chinese guests, namely two giant pandas. They will travel from Chengdu to Copenhagen to their new home.

"Everyone in Denmark looks very much forward to welcoming these two particular guests," Damsgaard said.
