Shanghai Vice-Mayor Wu Qing made the world's first 5G video call on March 30, in Hongkou district in Shanghai.
The 5G mobile network is 100 times faster and has 1,000 times more capacity compared with the 4G mobile network.
In recent years, China has paid great attention to the commercial use of 5G and made great efforts to introduce the infrastructure for a 5G network.
Till now China's three major telecommunication service providers China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have all completed 5G trials in 20 pilot cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hangzhou.
Shanghai is the only city listed as a pilot by all of the three major telecommunication service providers.
According to Zhang Jianming, vice-director of the Shanghai Municipal Economic and Information Commission, Shanghai aims to build more than 10,000 5G base stations in 2019, and the figure is expected to exceed 30,000 in 2021, so as to achieve comprehensive 5G coverage in the city.
5G will help to promote the rapid application and development of information technologies such as the industrial internet, big data health and medical care, cloud computing and the internet of things.
The experience accumulated in Shanghai will provide a good reference for other regions.
