A 16-car pileup on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway has caused seven injuries, with one person in critical condition.

The accident occurred at 12:20 pm on Wednesday, when a truck rushed into a line of vehicles around 59.8 kilometers away from the exit leaving the expressway in Beijing’s northwestern Yanqing district, according to a statement from the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau posted on its social media account.

The accident road section on the expressway has been closed and all vehicles still on the highway will drive out from the Badaling Toll Station, according to Beijing News.

A highway maintenance company under the Beijing Capital Highway Development Group said the crash caused a 16-car pileup and the rescue is underway.

Cao Qingsong, director of the rescue on the spot from the company, said that no death toll has been reported yet. Trailers have already been in place and relevant departments have been conducting an immediate on-site investigation, he added.

The seven injured people have been sent to hospitals and the investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, according to the police.

A road diversion measure has also been adopted to ease traffic, according to the traffic department.
