NANJING - Police in eastern China's Jiangsu province busted a fake cigarette operation involving more than 14 million yuan ($2.08 million), with four suspects seized.
More than 10,000 cartons of fake branded cigarettes, including makers Chunghwa and Yuxi, were seized by police from the city of Zhenjiang. Three fake cigarette warehouses were destroyed, said Ji Chengbin, deputy director of the local public security department, on Friday.
The bogus cigarette ring caught the attention of local police in Nov 2017. Investigations showed that the ring was led by four main suspects who had been purchasing fake cigarettes from Guangzhou city and selling them to 10 cigarette and liquor stores in Zhenjiang and Yangzhou cities.
The four main suspects have been prosecuted, police said.
