Beijing police has prioritized the fight against online violations since the beginning of this year, with the aim of providing a cleaner online environment for netizens, said the capital's public security bureau.
According to statistics released by the bureau on Monday, police across the city solved more than 2,000 internet related cases and detained more than 2,200 suspects from January to March.
"We had put in more effort to fight the use of techniques to steal personal information and those who organize gambling sessions or gamble online," as stated by the authority in a statement.
The police caught more than 530 people suspected of online fraud, online gambling and online drug purchases during the crackdown.
In the three-month span, the bureau also cleaned up more than 910,000 pieces of illegal information in the cyberspace and shut down about 360,000 problematic online accounts.
In addition, more than 20,000 smartphone applications with harmful or illegal content were removed to effectively ensure security in the mobile network.
"The fight will continue in line with the Chinese Criminal Law and the Cybersecurity Law to further maintain social stability and safeguard online security," added the bureau in the statement.
