Cloudburst floods streets in Central China metropolis

Xinhua | Updated: 2019-06-21 13:54

WUHAN - A torrential downpour has pummeled Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, leaving many roads waterlogged and flooding dozens of reservoirs, local authorities said Friday.

The rain that started on Thursday turned into a storm on Friday morning, causing overflowing at 46 small reservoirs in Wuhan, though no danger has been reported, the city's water authority said.

In the city proper, intense rain left 29 road sections submerged in rainwater and sewage and halted traffic at seven sections, the city traffic police said.

The metropolis of 11 million people had expected busy traffic on Friday amid a convergence of the morning rush and the legions of students heading for their senior high school entrance exams.

The water authority said they had mobilized more than 1,500 people and 300 pumping machines and vehicles into flood draining missions.
