The storming of the Legislative Council complex in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Monday is a grave violation of law, and the central government firmly supports the SAR government and police in handling the incident, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Tuesday.

Geng called the remarks the US, Britain and the European Union made about the incident "blatant double standards, extremely hypocritical and ugly", adding China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly against "countries' interference in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs".

"What would they do if the incident happened in the US or Europe?" Geng asked. "Would they let it be?"

"We warn these countries again to be cautious in their words and deeds, not interfere into Hong Kong's internal affairs in any way, not back violent lawbreakers in any way, not send any misleading message or commit any wrong moves," the spokesman added.
