BEIJING -- The China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) has called for further improving accessibility for the disabled people, underlining the urgency to install more elevators.

A program was launched at a press conference on Friday in Beijing to push for the installation of more elevators for old residential buildings.

According to data from the federation, there are currently 85 million Chinese people with disabilities and more than 40 million old people who suffer functional disability. Lack of elevators has caused tremendous inconvenience to such people who live in multi-storey buildings.

China plans to support the installation of elevators and the development of barrier-free environments, according to the government work report delivered to the annual national legislative session in March.
